Coming to Power
Two Years after the victory of the Russian Civil War, the Union of Soviet Social Republics abbreviated to U.S.S.R (and shortened to the Soviet Union) was found and led by Vladimir Lenin. In the same year of 1922, Joseph Stalin was newly appointed as the general secretary of the Communist party. Though not a significant ranking in the party compared to Lenin, it gave Stalin the power to control most of the party members and allowed him to slowly build his roots.
Right before Lenin had died, he was going to remove Stalin from his power, however he was extremely ill. Stalin took advantage of this and decided he wanted and could be in power. In 1924 Lenin died because of a series of strokes. After his death in 1923, Stalin outmaneuvered his rivals, by having them removed from their rankings and sending them to exile. He also had other rivals arrested at night and executed. He used these methods in order to gain total control of the Soviet Union. In the late 1920's Joseph Stalin officially became the dictator of the Soviet Union. Joseph Stalin now had complete control over political power and military power, killing, exiling or putting in jail anyone who got in his path.
